Speaker Biographies
Donald Malacrik, Esq.
Attorney Donald J. Malarcik has been an attorney licensed in the State of Ohio since 1993. He graduated from Kent State University with a B.S. in Political Science in 1990 and graduated from the University of Akron School of Law in 1993. After graduating and passing the bar he was hired as an Associate at Mentzer, Vuillemin & Mygrant in 1993. He made a partner in 1998. He formed Gorman, Malarcik & Pierce in 2011. In 2018 they became Malarcik, Pierce, Munyer & Will.
In 2001, I graduated from The Trial Lawyers College in Dubois, Wyoming. In 2006, I was invited to join the faculty of Trial Lawyers College. Since 2006, I have taught trial skills at four-day, seven-day, and three-week seminars offered in Ohio, Indiana, Georgia, Texas, Wyoming, Oregon, and Washington State.
I have been a faculty member of the weeklong annual Trial Lawyers College Death Penalty Seminar in Dubois, Wyoming since 2010. (In 2015, the name of the seminar was changed to "Defense of the Damned"). The Death Penalty Seminar (2010-2014) taught Death Penalty trial skills, plea negotiations, ethics, and best practices for identifying, preparing, and presenting mitigation to capital defense Attorneys, Investigators, and Mitigation Specialists. I was the co-faculty leader of the Death Penalty Seminar along with Attorney Cynthia Short in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Attorney Short is the former head of the Kansas City, Missouri Capital Litigation Division of the Public Defender's Office and now runs CLS Mitigation and Consulting Services.
He has been a presenter at the OACDL and OSBA Death Penalty Seminars on capital voir dire, identifying, investigating, and presenting mitigation, pretrial motions practice, race as mitigation, and the attorney-client relationship for trial counsel in capital cases. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Akron School of Law teaching Trial Advocacy. He has been leading counsel for over hundred (100) jury trials.
Scott Rilley, Esq. Deputy Director, Summit Legal Defenders
Scott was born and raised in Summit County, graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and was admitted to practice in Ohio in 1993. He formerly practiced with the firm of Callahan, Greven, Rilley & Sinn in Summit and surrounding counties. Scott has extensive experience in all aspects of criminal law, both as an Assistant Summit County Prosecutor and a defense attorney, and he has devoted his almost 30 years of experience exclusively to criminal law. Scott has extensive trial experience, having presented well over 200 cases to a jury throughout his career and is considered one of the most experienced defense attorneys in the northeast Ohio area. He was also appointed to the Governing Board of the Summit County Community Based Correctional Facility in August of 2023
Abigail M. Schock, Esq., Director of Training, Summit Legal Defenders
Originally from Northeastern Pennsylvania, Abigail graduated from The Ohio State University in 2009 with a B.A. in Geography. She obtained her J.D. from the University of Akron School of Law and in 2013 was licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio. While in law school, Abigail interned at the Summit Legal Defender’s Office, the Federal Public Defender, and the University of Akron School of Law Legal Clinic. Abigail began her career as a Public Defender at the Tuscarawas County Public Defender’s Office where she represented indigent defendants charged with misdemeanor offenses. She then moved to the Portage County Public Defender’s Office where she most recently managed a team of felony attorneys in Common Pleas Court. She has significant trial experience ranging from misdemeanor to felony jury trials. She obtained NHSTA certification to defend OVI cases. Abigail is extremely passionate about indigent defense and believes that providing quality legal representation to indigent defendants is one of the most important and meaningful cornerstones of the legal profession. She hopes to share this passion in her role as Training Director.
Damon Hacker, President & CEO | Founder Vestige Digital Investigations
Damon Hacker, MBA, CCE, CSXF, CMMC-RP, is a Founder and President & CEO of Vestige Digital Investigations, a leading technology company specializing in Cybersecurity (proactive & reactive), and Digital Forensics. A pioneer in these fields, he brings more than 30 years of experience in the arena, including a background in IT Security and IT Auditing. He helps to improve the techniques, processes and technology in cybersecurity and digital forensics within the legal process. He actively assists clients achieve compliance with many different cybersecurity frameworks. Helping to shape this important and fast-moving industry, he is responsible for leading Vestige and overseeing corporate strategic direction and growth, finance and administration, as well as the sales and marketing function of the company.

Damon is an in-demand speaker on local, state and national levels. He speaks on the subjects of DoD CMMC cybersecurity compliance, IT security, IT auditing, computer and digital fraud, white-collar crime, data breach, non-compete and intellectual property theft. In addition, Mr. Hacker consults on cyber and digital forensics for the television industry, having consulted for The Blacklist, Bones, CSI: Cyber, CSI: Las Vegas, and Backstrom.
He earned both his Master in Business Administration from the Weatherhead School of Management, and his undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University. In addition he is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), CSX – Cybersecurity Nexus Fundamentals certified from ISACA, is a Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification – Registered Practitioner (CMMC-RP) for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) cybersecurity compliance.
Supreme Court of Ohio, Commission on CLE
Credit has been approved with the Supreme Court of Ohio, Commission on CLE for 3.00 General credits. Akron Bar Association is an approved CLE provider with the Ohio Supreme Court.
Please submit cancellations directly to the CLE Department via email. Refunds include a $30 cancellation fee, but if you cancel at least seven business days prior to the day of the course we will waive this fee. Failure to submit a notice of cancelation prior to 12 pm EST the day before forfeits entitlement to a refund. The Akron Bar Association and Foundation reserves the right to change, reschedule or cancel programing if circumstances warrant.
