2025 0101 OVI-Substance Abuse Series

Provides the background information and sets the stage for substance abuse (OVI and drugs, specifically, marijuana). An explanation identifying these drugs, their effects on the body, and how they affect comprehension and behavior. They will discuss any personal experiences with the audience.

Instruction on any of their causes, prevention, detection, and treatment alternatives. They will go over cases involving substance abuse and the effects they had on the clients of impaired attorneys and judges.

Addressing the following rules of ethics relevant to OVI practice and potential ethical pitfalls one might encounter when taking these cases: Ohio Rule of Professional Conduct 1.1.: Competence, The intersection of Rules of Professional Conduct 1.6 (Confidentiality of Information) and 3.3 (Candor Toward the Tribunal), Communication of Fields of Practice and Specialization, and Affects on Clients with Diminished Capacity.

Personal experiences and cases involving Judges in the Administrative, Municipal, Ninth Appellate District, Recovery, and Specialty Courts as well as how judges dispense justice in these cases, and their various ways to approach these important issues.

Gretchen Mote will discuss the impact of these cases on attorneys and their professional careers.

Karen Osmond will wrap up the series with case law updates, testimonies, and advice.
