Summit County, Ohio - Summit County Common Pleas Court Administrative Judge Kathryn Michael announced today that Summit County citizens should be aware that a jury scam has resurfaced in our community. The Court is issuing this advisory warning for residents who receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from law enforcement. The caller usually refers to the recipient’s failure to appear for jury service. At some point, the caller demands payment of a fine, and threatens arrest.
When a juror misses scheduled jury service, the Summit County Jury Commissioner’s office will send a letter asking the juror to contact their office to reschedule jury service. The Summit County Jury Commissioner’s office will never contact residents by phone regarding a missed jury service date. No law enforcement officer will ever contact residents by phone because of a missed jury service date. And, no law enforcement officer would ever ask for payment of any type for a missed jury service date.
“All citizens need to be aware of all types of scams, and should notify local law enforcement immediately. Our community needs to be reminded that no one should provide personal and financial information over the phone, if they are targeted,” said Judge Michael.
If you have already provided confidential information to someone who has identified himself or herself as a representative of law enforcement, you should take the necessary steps to protect your identity.
