State of Ohio - In Sep. 2019, the Notary Modernization Act took effect, implementing significant Notary Public changes. The Office of the Ohio Secretary of State (Office) is seeking Board Members for the Notary Advisory Board (Board). The Notary Advisory Board meets quarterly to discuss the notary laws and procedures for the State of Ohio. The Board reviews and makes suggestions for changes to the language in ORC Chapter 147 and the notary administrative code. In addition, the Board is responsible for investigating notary publics following the submission of a complaint alleging a violation of notary law.
Qualifications to serve as a Board Member:
An individual must be a licensed attorney;
And an active Notary Public in the State of Ohio.
This position is unpaid. However, Board Members can seek reimbursement for expenses incurred during an investigation, e.g., mileage and postage. Board Members' commitment to complete at least 2 to 3 notary investigations per year. They must meet in person or virtually with the notary public and other witnesses. If a notary public appeals disciplinary, an administrative hearing will occur, and the investigator will serve as a witness. After completing an investigation, the investigator recommends discipline by submitting a report of findings to the Office. In the summer of 2022, new Board Members will receive training for the role of investigator.
