The Akron Bar Association strongly condemns the threats on the life of Summit County Common Pleas Judge Amy Corrigall Jones that were reported by the Akron Beacon Journal on Feb. 2, 2022. We are grateful to the Summit County Sheriff’s Department for acting on the threats with haste.
Judges play a critical and important role in our criminal justice system in ensuring the fair and impartial dispensation of justice. They should not be placed in the precarious situation where they fear for their lives because of the important responsibilities that they are asked to undertake as public servants.
Judges are tasked with the important responsibility of making decisions about the most difficult issues in our society based upon the evidence presented and the law. Threats of violence and the general lack of respect for others in today’s society must stop, as it carries over into all aspects of daily life to the point that inexcusable violent threats against members of the judiciary are being made. Such threats are not only attacks upon our individual judges, but are, in reality, attacks on the rule of law, which is the foundation of our entire society.
The Akron Bar Association was founded in 1875 and is an Ohio not-for-profit corporation with a membership base of over 1,500 members consisting of lawyers, judges, paralegals, legal staff, law students, and paralegal students. In addition to serving our members, we serve the public by providing referrals to pre-screened lawyers and investigating grievances against attorneys with a Summit County mailing address.
