FastCase:  The Hidden Gem of Membership!

It surprises me each time I come across an Akron Bar Association member that has yet to use FastCase for their legal research. I’ve been with two other widely known research programs and while I really like different features of both, I enjoy using FastCase even more because it comes free with my Akron Bar membership! Attorneys often confuse this online research tool with Casemaker, which focused its information on Ohio. The Fastcase database available to local attorneys includes federal and state caselaw, a quick caselaw search box, and an advanced caselaw search where you can refine jurisdictions, dates, and courts to meet your specific research needs.

Fastcase is user-friendly with familiar operators for keyword searches. The red flag is held by the Fastcase “Bad Law Bot” robot warning you of bad caselaw. A list of your last ten searches reminds you where you left off in your research and there are folders where you can store your research if you cannot get through it all and need to return later. If you are anything like me, you’ll also enjoy the user guides, tutorials, and live help chat options when you are crunched for time and cannot find what you need.

Being active in the Akron Bar Association has many benefits including superior continuing legal education opportunities and camaraderie through the many Sections and Committees. The provision of FastCase to all Akron Bar Members is truly the hidden gem of membership and well worth the time of learning a new option for research.
