Live Interactive (Zoom) Webinar - Course Description
Access to quality education is one of the most important factors, along with a child’s zip code, in predicting future success. All children in the U.S. are entitled to a public education under the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Plyer v. Doe, 457 U.S. 202 (1982). Additionally, access to education is a property right that schools cannot deprive children of without procedural due process. Goss v. Lopez, 419 U.S. 565 (1975). Knowing a student’s rights, and the unique laws that apply to especially vulnerable students, such as children experiencing housing insecurity, children with a disability, immigrants, and LGBTQIA+ youth can make all the difference in ensuring that schools provide children with the education they are legally entitled to receive.
Join Jennifer Martinez, Supervising Attorney for the Education Law practice group at ABLE (Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc.) in this webinar discussing the recent changes to Ohio laws that may impact vulnerable students, what Constitutional rights all students continue to have, and what additional rights students in protected groups have to be free from discrimination under federal and Ohio law.
This seminar is presented by the Toledo Bar Association for 1.0 NLT/General CLE.
