Lay Members Sought for Service on Disciplinary Committees

AKRON BAR ASSOCIATION SEEKS LAY MEMBERS FOR SERVICE ON ITS CERTIFIED GRIEVANCE COMMITTEE & THE FEE ARBITRATION COMMITTEE

The Supreme Court of Ohio has certified the Grievance Committee of the Akron Bar Association the investigate allegations of and prosecute attorney misconduct which would be in violation of the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct. The purpose of the grievance process is first and foremost to protect the public from attorney misconduct in violation of these Rules. In order to assure the appearance of impartiality and concern for the public, the Supreme Court of Ohio requires that non-attorney laypersons of the community participate in the grievance process, including active involvement in grievance investigations. Additionally, the By-laws of the Fee Arbitration Committee require a laymember participate on panels to arbitrate fee disputes between attorneys and their clients. The Akron Bar Association is seeking laypersons for appointment beginning July 1, 2016 to terms of service on the Certified Grievance Committee or the Fee Arbitration Committee. There are no formal qualification requirements for laypersons; however, laypersons serving on the Certified Grievance Committee are required to attend the monthly Committee meeting generally held on the second Thursday of each month at 3:45 p.m. In addition, when assigned to an investigation (generally one-two per calendar year) laypersons are required to attend interviews of both the grievant and the attorney respondent (generally scheduled during regular business hours based upon the availability of all parties) and be available by telephone and/or email to participate in deliberations with the other investigators. Finally, an ability to maintain strict confidentiality is required as both investigations and committee deliberations are confidential. Laypersons serving on the Fee Arbitration participate on fee dispute panels as schedules permit, usually 1-2 times per year. The application for appointment to either of these Committees is attached. Please complete & submit the application below.  Paper applications can be returned to:
