Donnie Long Memorial Fund

AKRON BAR ASSOCIATION ESTABLISHES DONNIE LONG MEMORIAL FUND
Shortly after Donnie Long's passing, the Bar Association established the "Donnie Long Memorial Fund." While there have been several contributions to that fund since Donnie's passing, the Board of Trustees of the Akron Bar Association recently gave some direction to that fund by establishing it as a fund which will be used for purposes of teaching an ACT and/or SAT preparation class for high school seniors who are graduates of the Akron Area Law and Leadership Institute Program.

This direction for those funds came at the suggestion of Professor Joann Sahl of The University of Akron Law School, who is also the Director for the Akron Area Law and Leadership Institute. Professor Sahl suggested that rather than spending the money to pay for the fees associated with one or two students who might wish to participate in the Law and Leadership Institute, and rather than establishing a scholarship for perhaps one or two graduates of the Law and Leadership Institute for either college or law school, the money would be better used by paying for an ACT and/or SAT preparation class for the students. This way, the money could actually assist all LLI graduates! Most of the students involved in the Law and Leadership Institute come from families who typically do not have family members attending college. They also often cannot afford to send their child to college. By helping the students to achieve higher ACT and SAT test scores, the money raised by the Akron Bar Association and Akron Bar Foundation for the Donnie Long Memorial Fund will assist the Law and Leadership Institute graduates both with acceptance into universities they migh wish to attend and to receive merit based financial aid at those schools, thereby making college attendance a greater possibility for a greater percentage of the Law and Leadership Institute graduates.

In addition to giving direction to the Donnie Long Memorial Fund, the Akron Bar Association and the Akron Bar Foundation have also each agreed to match contributions made by individuals to the Donnie Long Memorial Fund up to $2,500 for each organization. Therefore, your gift of $100 instantly becomes a gift of $300 to the Donnie Long Memorial Fund.
