Mission Statement:
As the charitable arm of the Akron Bar Association, the Foundation strives to improve the quality of justice and improve the image of lawyers through the support of law related and public service programs primarily directed to the Akron Metropolitan area.
Community Involvement
Akron Bar Foundation members have long been actively involved in the communities where they live and work. Our members participate in virtually every community and civic activity and serve on local boards, task forces to address community issues, youth commissions, civil mediation services, and the Bar Association's
Scholarship Committee.
Funding
The Foundation is funded primarily through pledges made by its
Fellows, who wish to support furthering knowledge of and respect for the law. Fellows contribute a total of $2,500, which is paid evenly over a period of 10 years. Additional funding is made available in the form of gifts to the Foundation to mark such milestones as professional appointments, retirement and birthdays, or as memorial gifts in honor of a lifetime of service to the legal profession. Such gifts allow the Foundation to perpetuate the ideals of the honoree by funding programs that benefit the entire community. Each year the foundation hosts a
dinner and auction. The event is usually held on the first Friday in December. For more information, please contact the bar office at (330) 253-5007.
How We Decide Where The Money Goes
The primary focus of the Foundation's charitable giving program is meeting the needs of community organizations through small, but significant donations for local programs. Consequently, any community group meeting the criteria for grants is eligible for consideration. All requests for grants are carefully reviewed and considered by a rotating committee of Foundation members. The decisions as to whom the Foundation will award a grant is based on the need and goals of the requesting group in relation to the stated mission of the Foundation. Preference will be given to those causes and issues that are "law-related" in nature.
Our Vision for the Future
The Foundation looks forward to greatly expanding its role as a grant provider for law-related, charitable organizations and programs throughout the greater Akron area. Through steady growth, the Foundation's long- term plan is to position itself as one of the community's major charitable organizations. By promoting the administration of justice, and providing education about the role of lawyers and the law within the community, the Foundation seeks to have a significant impact on the greater Akron area.
